Emoji domains sound cool as hell. You see something like ❤️.ws or 🔥.to and think, “Damn, that’s different.” But once you dig into them, you realize they’re a lot more limited and messy than most people expect.

1. What Exactly Is an Emoji Domain?

Normal domains only allow letters A–Z, numbers 0–9, and hyphens. Emoji domains let you use actual emojis and other Unicode symbols in the name.

The catch? The DNS system only understands plain ASCII characters. So every emoji domain gets converted into something called Punycode — a weird string that starts with xn--.

On April 19, 2001, Verisign and ICANN opened the door a little and allowed some Unicode symbols in .com and .net. That same day, a few of the earliest ones were registered:

The First Big Wave – 2003

According to the latest data from UnicodeDomain.com, out of roughly 255 two-letter country domains, only eight still actively allow emoji or Unicode domains:

Important: You cannot register new emoji domains on .com, .net, or .org. That door closed in 2010 and it’s not reopening anytime soon. A tiny number of old “grandfathered” ones still exist, but they’re rare.

  • Common uses: short marketing campaigns, personal fun projects, redirects, or pure collecting.

They look cool in screenshots. In real life? They’re kind of a pain.
